jeff stone roop, rip, the first long haired hippie i ever met, he played guitar in a church summer school
i attended.
1971 G.W. and his family move to franklin grove to twist road off of old mill road, on a hill from
the largest spring in lee county.
kirby stomberg starts a rock band in the attic of the family home with musicians ron white, dave smickey,
bruce currier, dennis stomberg and others, which could be heard blocks away.

early 1973 rick and greg drink a bottle of wine on top of the lincoln building downtown franklin grove,
in the cold snowy weather.
1973 g.w writes one of his first songs MOTHERS REQUEST.
1973 g. stomberg meets g.w. and family at bob logans annual corn boil where they are playing guitar
and partying down, sneaks some beer with his cousin and enjoys g.w.'s playing.
1974 big drug bust in franklin.
1974 the stombergs move out of town to daysville blacktop and dwayne smith helps them move
and becomes the first smith boy to get drunk,
1976 'we're all a bunch of fried turkeys' paul smith at a party on the circle hill in franklin
before the cops got there.
1977 g. stomberg gets two poems published in Flights of Fancy from Young Publications, they are TIME and
AND NOW...
1977 g. stomberg joins the rock band Syberite after meeting bruce schwitters at crest foods job, and buys
first guitar from g.w. smith who also works there, greg also buys a van from george, greg sells the van to joan currier and
buys her reel to reel recorder to record syberite songs.
1977 Syberite records many songs written by g. stomberg.,
1978 g.w. smith's wife leaves him and takes the two girls leaving the four boys.
g.w. writes 'oh lord i come to you'.
late 1978 tom and pauls apartment in dixon becomes the party spot.
1978 g. stomberg gets one poem published in Lyrical Voices from Young Publications EVE, no copy exists of
this poem.,
1978 greg records three songs with the new Syberite band, jeff snow and mitch ?.
1978 the first annual franklin festival, its funny that the annual festival in franklin grove il was started
by a bunch of young beer drinking hippies, at lovers leap.
winter 1978 g.w. toughs it out by staying at the cabin with no water, no heat, etc.,
1979 Labor Day first recording known of G.W. Smith, original songs performed : THE FRANKLIN GROVE BUM, THE
SPRING IN THE SKY, CORN WHISKEY STILL, and greg's rowdy DRINK THAT BEER, musicians include : Gregory Stomberg, Donald Stomberg
and G.W. Smith, (Promise for sure i won't drink anymore if you try me just one more time.) greg had picked up george at monday's
bridge after g.w. had just gotten out of jail, they went to the stomberg home to record some songs, after recording about
a dozen songs don stomberg came home and joined them in the jam session.
1979 spring, the second annual franklin festival held in franklin grove at the smiths home on old mill road,
with a hog roast and kegs of beer this was the largest party in franklin history.

1980 the marijuana wine tapes where G.W. performed his original song HIS UNDYING LOVE, plus two picking
instrumentals with musicians G.W., Bruce Currier, Randy Alex, Mike Beach, dwayne smith, and Greg Stomberg, recorded in
oregon at gregs apartment.
1980 g. stomberg, dave cook, and rick hultquist record several rock songs.
1980 g.w. writes ''summer morning sunrise' (written on a paper towel in the stomberg 'g.w. smith collection'),
'little things', 'his undyiung love'.
5-19-80 from greg's diary ' g.w. is back and we partied like old times again, in a trailer on old
mill road, i left my guitar with him when i left, then when i got back i found out he left and hitch hiked to iowa with it,
hope he still has it.'
later 6-14-80 'g.w. tapes with the m wine, george says he lost my guitar when a thunderstorm forced him
under a bridge and a flood washed it away, near iowa.'.

1981 Basement tapes with G.W performing IN LOVE ALL ALONE, WALK THROUGH THIS WORLD WITH ME, with
musicians g.w., greg stomberg, shorty kuhn, mark wright, the wulfs, red eyes, vince, donnie stomberg, and family, this was
a double keg party in the basement.

4-82 greg stomberg marries misty.
3-20-83 valerie marie stomberg born.

1984 alcohol summer, G.W. was in the badlands writing songs and being a cowboy drifting hobo so greg stomberg
and bruce currier recorded a slew of instrumentals playing the flute, banjo, guitars, harmonicas and more. Bruce Schwitters,
of the infamous syberite band, joined them for a dozen instrumentals and one of those songs, THE GOATSKIN SONG, ended
up on the G.W. SMITH CD VOLUME TWO.

4-85 g.w. moves in with darrin and gerri in dixon.
5-85 FATE MAGAZINE ARTICLE by g. stomberg tells the tale of g.w. and darrin seeing a black panther at the
spring in franklin grove.

1985 g.w. smith writes the songs 'take care of mother' (i wrote that in the back of a chicken shack,
all hot and sweaty and nasty and i got to thinking about mom, who i had not seen for years, and i wrote that song.' g.w. on
tape), 'tears to my eyes', 'a birthday card to jesus', 'the ones i love', 'being my bride', roses for you', 'big catfish',
'church sunday morning',' he had a mother', horsefly', 'there's a cowboy somewhere', 'oklahoma sun'.
9-29-85 first mention of the shitkickin kid, boy howdy and girlieburger mccfry.
10-85 THE CAGE took a walk down to the springs the other side of franklin creek, hid behind a leaning oak
just so i could take a leak, so if you see me running around along the wooden trail don't look too close at my peace
pipe or i could end up in jail, and there i'll be writing songs to let out all my rage just a wounded animal in a city slickers
cage.
1986 SILVER CITY i was a homeless wanderer riding out on the range in the old covered wagon i knew i needed
a change, so with my old dog red and the clothes on my back headed back to the forest, god knows i'm glad to be back, till
an old drinking charge got me in the lee county jail, spent a year doing time just a trying to raise the bail and when
my debt was all paid i had no where else to go till i found my silver city now god knows that i'm home, silver city god only
knows where i'd go without you, you're a home and a shelter when all the world's blue so now i've somewhere to go where i
know that it's pretty, a trailer in the woods i call silver city.
1- 1986 G.W. went to prison for a spell on an old drinking charge where he wrote many songs.

4-10-87 the way i heard it was that g.w. was all messed up in dixon and the taverns all closed and
he had no place to go and no way to get there and it was cold so he stumbled down to the police station to see if maybe they'd
let him stay in the jail till morning, well, they came up with a warrant for failure to appear on a broken seal charge and
arrested him and took him to jail.
PLEASE DON'T DECEIVE ME i may not be in church but i'm down on my knewws praying to the lord please don't
deceive me, cause i've been a sinner so i'm asking you please to accept me into heaven, i know you won't deceive me, lord

life we lived was just a ball, guitar banjo and percussion we had every kind of instrumentation, drank some beer as we did
play, had some good times i must say.

jar, they listen to him play while stamping their canes as he picks away their blues again, they might get drunk and have
a good time as g.w. writes the words that rhyme, we sing along in a happy get together,as we wish time would stop altogether,
he would play and we'd sing along, alzheimers made us get the words all wrong, he would sing and pick the blues away i this
nursing home where the kids put us to stay.
5-03- THE FOREST JAMS when you walk thru the woods, on the way to franklin creek out near old mill road
is the spirit that you seek, you can hear him playing his guitar near the the springs, his songs ring of laughter and
the joy that it brings, his heart may have stopped but his beat still lives today with the gurgling brook and in the winds
sway, some say his harmonica still plays after dark with the beating of drums made from the tree bark, while others say his
voice echos in the high grass and you can always hear the ancient voices on the distant past, along the creek near a bend
there's a cave up out of the mud some say he's there with slewfoot to help out in case of flood, so if you hear music
as you walk the trail, remember the stories of his ghost are true, so behave yourself and don't leave a mess and maybe his
